Rice Island: Bali and the Cultivation of Tradition.

Planting rice. Planting Rice

During my first visit to Bali, I met with farmers and learned about the process of irrigated rice farming, the complex system of distributing irrigation water, the ceremonies around rice growing, and the economics of rice production.

While rice harvests were are more productive, and Bali is one of the most productive agricultural landscapes in the world—where farmers can grow as many as three crops of rice pear year—farmers remain very poor.
