Traditional architecture in Bali stems from two sources: the Hindu tradition brought to the island from India via Java, and an indigenous architecture that predates the Hindu epic. This earlier architecture is reminiscent of Polynesian building styles. The Balinese temple, for example, is generally surrounded by a stone wall that divides sacred areas from the more secular village, similar to Hawaiian and Tahitian places of worship.
