Flowers of Bali

In Bali, flowers—which are everywhere—seem as necessary to life as food and shelter. In addition to ornamentation, flowers are offered to the gods. Frangipani, Kenanga, and Sedap malam are particularly used for ritual and dance purposes. White flowers—such as jasmine, the national flower of Indonesia—symbolize purification.

The flower shown here is from the genus of Hymenocallis, which means "beautiful membrane" in Greek. It is the species of white spider lily called Tropical Giant.
