Thus the desert’s clearest signal: Pay attention. Show respect. Be aware. Beware. The desert—land of djinns, whirlwinds, mirages, and thundering sands, sharp rocks and diamantine sands—does not tolerate our inexperience. It assures us of our many imperfections, tests us and finds us wanting. And it demands that we adjust our viewpoint, seeing in it not so much absence as an embarrassment of riches.
