Interstate 25 is tucked right behind the first ridge.', 'The pond was mostly frozen over, so the cranes stood on the ice, occassionally sinking through.', 'Some of the first of this congregation of cranes to take off.', 'Unlike herons and egrets, cranes fly with necks extended.', 'Unlike geese, however, their legs trail behind them as they fly.', 'As comical as they can appear when taking off and landing, they are majestic in flight.', 'A bit further north, we found a roadside pond brimming with snow geese, quite a delight since we weren\'t able to view them this closely from the observation deck.', 'The geese fly to New Mexico (and sometimes as far south as northern Mexico) from Alaska, where they breed and spend most of the year.', 'The geese shared close (and icy) quarters with more Sandhill cranes.', 'This quartet of Sandhill cranes was a delight to watch as they argued among themselves about when, I suppose, they\'d take flight.', 'They finally decide to go, and line up two-by-two as if jets on a runway waiting their turn.', 'Taking flight. Is it cliched to call them poetry in motion? So be it!', 'The birds stand about four feet tall, and being that large need a good push to get up into the air.', 'Like the snow geese before them, they flare into the day.' );
