Rice Island: Bali and the Cultivation of Tradition.

Rice paddies. Terraced Rice Paddies
Outside Ubud, Bali

Bali is a wondrous place, with vast rice terraces that serve as manmade ecosystems unto themselves. While in Bali I didn’t seek out beautiful landscapes—I was there to help the people of Bali and to meet with artists who I could work with to bring their wares to the U.S. But just a short walk outside of the tourist-oriented town of Ubud put me in rice paddies stretching elegantly across the hilly landscape. Even the small lot behind my hotel was actively farmed.
